A range of different encoders is available for applications requiring and accurate control of motor velocity, direction of rotation, and positioning. The performance of a drive or servo system depends on the precision and reliability of the servo components available. Micro-Drives incremental shaft encoders are based on magnetic design principles. To reduce the influence of resonant frequencies, the encoders are mounted directly on the shaft.
Operating principle of magnetic encoders
Magnetic encoders are based on a multi-pole permanent magnet disc mounted directly on the motor shaft. Magnetic flux variations are detected by magnetic sensors and converted into output signals with a 90ºphase shift. This principle allows the configuration of micro-encoders characterized by very small dimensions and high resolutions.
Optical encoders use a continuous infrared light source transmitting through a low-inertia multi-section rotor disk which is fitted directly on the motor rear end shaft. The unit thus generates two output signals with a 90° phase shift.
